QUOTA MANAGEMENT
In October 1986 the Quota Management System (QMS) was introduced to New Zealand. It is now globally acclaimed and New Zealand is considered to have some of the most well-managed fisheries in the world. There are 98 species (or species groups) in the New Zealand QMS, divided into 642 seperate fish stocks.Quota is a share in fish stock. Each year under the QMS Quota Owners are allocated an Annual Catch Entitlement (ACE) which gives them the right to catch a certain amount of a fish stock during the fishing year. By controlling the amount of fish taken from each stock enables the New Zealand fisheries to maintain sustainability.
